In 1997 I was offered the position of "Intranet Webmaster" at the US Army Research Laboratory in Aberdeen MD. I was given an IBM RS/6000 running AIX and the Apache HTTPD server, and a dumb Xterm. 20 years later I had built the Lab's web application infrastructure to modern standards, keeping up with the amazing speed of the Internet's evolution. When I left the lab in 2017 I had amassed several "virtualized" environments, managing about 100 servers with a DevOps development team, porting legacy apps to current industry standards, servicing 2000+ scientists and engineers worldwide. I learned computing from the people who created them, the Internet from the people who built it. That 20 years was a wild ride. I'm now looking to the next 20 years and am certain I will always be helping bridge the gap between humans and computers.
